River Statistics:
The Gunnison is fishing good this spring, but run off is starting, and we may see off color water over the next several weeks. The river has been fishing good with streamers, nymphs, and dries under the right conditions. there have been baetis hatches, and a few caddis on the warmer days. Small stones are working too, and as the waters rise and dirty this spring, think bigger stones, san juans, and more flash. moving upstream to another access point would be the best way to try for clearer water. Streamers have fished well, and will continue to fish good as long as the visibility holds. Increasing flows push larger food items around, making for some real good big bug fishing. Look for the stones and larger attractor nymphs to fish best over the next several weeks. Still some lake run fish down low closer to townn, but this gets tougher to fish with the run off starting to show its face.
Clearer water up the Taylor for sure. Smaller baetis, midges, and mysis patterns have done best at the C&R. The recent bump up to over 100 cfs has pushed some larger bows around, and the fishing has been improving with better hatches and increased water. Huevos are still in play, and small emergers have fished well by mid day. Light tippets down to 6X fluorocarbon have been getting more eats, but tough to hold a 10 pounder on 3.5lb tippet. Some larger fish in the 24+ class are showing up, and the fishing should be good here through spring. Lower canyon is fishing good with smaller stones, midges, and mayflies. some good hatches bringing the fish to the surface. 100 cfs lends itself to dry fly or dry dropper fishing. |
