Colorado Fly Fishing Reports from Rocky Mountain Anglers

Colorado Fly Fishing Reports

ACROSS COLORADO

Temperatures have been pretty cold across the state, I saw a low of -24 in Kremmling the other day.  Look to our many tail waters to provide angling oppertunities for the rest of the winter.  Places like the Frying Pan, Blue, South Platte, Taylor, and Yampa are all good waters to fish this time of year and some of these can produce really big fish.  The Pueblo tail water on the Arkansas has the best and most consistent dry fly fishing, while the Pan, Dream Stream, or Taylor is your best chance for a 10 pounder.  All of these tail waters are fishing good and some fish in the 6 to 10 pound class have been caught. Midges are the major food insect this time of year and hatches will increase over the next 6 to 8 weeks.  Scuds, sow bugs, san juan worms, leeches and mysis are very important organisms for winter feeding fish and should be fished with confidence.  The Colorado river is waking up and from Parshall to Rifle we are hearing good reports with excellent nymphing and good midge hatches bringing fish to the surface.  The Dream Stream should be HOT all March with big lake run fish.

BOULDER                                                                             Frying Pan Rainbow

The creek is fishable through town with the lower canyon fading in and out of ice.  The deeper runs and pools fish best right now with small san juan worms and even smaller midges.  Try small patterns sized down to #22 in a variety of colors including black, red, and gray.  The ice is melting in the lower canyon and open water can be found from 4 Mile Canyon to town.  Stonefly nymphs, wooly buggars, and attractor nymphs in sizes 8 to 16 have been good with the warming trends lately.

South Boulder Creek is flowing at 84cfs which is a good flow keeping wading on the easier side.  The water temperatures are in the mid thirties so bug activity is minimal but there have been a few midges hatching on warmer days.  Look for eggs and san juan worms to be good point flies, with smaller midge trailers.  Chartreuse eggs are a good color choice, and soon black stones will be crawling to the edges to hatch. The best is yet to come!!!
